Composite dental bonding – What is it exactly?
Composite bonding is a cosmetic dental treatment where a tooth-coloured resin (the same material used in white fillings) is applied to the surface of the problem tooth. It can be coloured to blend in seamlessly with your existing smile and is used to fill in chips, cracks or pitted areas. Once applied, the resin is hardened (typically with a curing light) and polished to resemble the new tooth surface.
Essentially, dental bonding not only creates an instant and affordable smile transformation but also adds protection to the underlying tooth.
Here are some other advantages:
- Treatment is quick – typically taking the same time as a standard filling.
- It’s non-invasive – No drilling or needles necessary.
- It creates an instant impact.

FAQs
What are the alternatives to composite dental bonding?
Other alternatives to dental bonding include teeth whitening and porcelain veneers, depending on your requirements. While teeth whitening is relatively speedy and speaks for itself, veneers take longer and are more expensive. That said, they last considerably longer, 10-15 years on average.
Is composite bonding right for me?
If your teeth are predominantly healthy aside from the odd blemish, chip or hairline crack, you’re a good candidate for dental bonding. Reading patients should know that we can colour-match the resin to your existing teeth for a seamless application.
How long does dental bonding last?
Unfortunately, composite bonding is not a permanent procedure and lasts, on average, 4-8 years. However, biting hard objects like fingernails, having a poor oral hygiene routine or developing a habit like teeth grinding (bruxism) can all impact longevity.
Can dental bonding material be whitened?
Unfortunately not. Composite resin does not respond to bleaching in the same way that natural tooth enamel does. For this reason, we would recommend that patients get their teeth whitened first.
