It’s common knowledge that dental implants can be used to plug the gap of a single missing tooth but what about several or more teeth? The good news is that each missing tooth doesn’t necessarily require an implant.
Often, a more cost-effective and stable solution is to utilise implant-supported bridges. Essentially, it works to the same principle of a conventional bridge where larger gaps are filled by bridging restorations, except, in this instance, dental implants are used to support them, rather than adjacent natural teeth.
Typically, when you are missing several adjacent teeth, a high-quality titanium implant is placed at either end of the gap. In most cases, temporary replacement teeth are also fitted while the implants heal.
The dental bridge comprises a crown at each end with one or more crowns connected in between, depending on the number of missing teeth being replaced. Once the implants are stabilised, the crowns at each end of the bridge are placed over the implant posts while the crowns in the centre close the gap, giving the illusion of a full smile.
